Welcome to Blog Against Theocracy 2011

This is a blogswarm dedicated to the separation of church and state.

It is not a blogswarm against religion. Bloggers who believe in religion, and those who don't, are equally welcome here. What we share is a common commitment to the First Amendment to the Constitution and its guarantee of church-state separation.

This is also not a blogswarm against a particular candidate or party. But the rhetoric coming from the Republican side, particularly in courting Iowa evangelicals, gives us all pause. Nearly every "social issue" can be seen as a battle on the grounds of religious liberty. It is the position of this blogswarm that separation of church and state protects both, and that freedom of, or freedom from, religion is a choice every American has the right to pursue.

Blog Against Theocracy is doing something a little different this year; we're just using the hashtag #AgainstTheocracy on Twitter and Facebook to promote our posts. I look forward to reading your stuff! Thanks very much.

Tengrain of also wrote the best concise description of this blogswarm, that I quote every year:

The theme [of the blogswarm], like always, is the Separation of Church and State — we are for it. But the variations on the theme are many...This is not a bashing of religion - peeps can believe what they choose, however they choose — but it is a reminder that the Government should keep out of religion, and Religion should keep out of the government.

We invite you to create a logo for the blogswarm. If you want me to include your logo on this site, email me; my addy is on the sidebar to the right. I will be posting logos I've already received later this week.

Here is how to participate in the blogswarm.

1. Write a post in support of our United States Constitution, specifically regarding the separation of Church and State. You can write your post anytime, but the blogswarm takes place Easter Weekend, April 2-4, 2010. Your post will be linked at the Blog Against Theocracy website during and just after that weekend. No submissions will be accepted after April 5.

If you have any writer's block on this, here are some great websites to get you started:

Blog Against Theocracy - Call for Logos

It looks like for Blog Against Theocracy we might be up against the current administration. From Americans United, which is an excellent resource as we all start thinking about this year's blogswarm:

President Obama has failed to deliver on his campaign statements. When creating his Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, Obama failed to adequately prevent harmful discrimination on the basis of religion by government grantees. Although President Obama had originally proposed a new take on the Faith-Based Initiative, one that will not maintain the constitutional and civil rights pitfalls of the Bush Administration, the executive order he signed last week leaves the entire architecture of the Bush Faith-Based Initiative intact - every rule, every regulation, every executive order. And thanks to an aggressive anti-civil rights push from the Department of Justice near the end of the Bush Administration, nearly every social service tax dollar distributed by the government can be used for discriminatory hiring. In a time of unprecedented need, this is even more unacceptable than ever.

Here is how to participate in the blogswarm.

1. Write a post in support of our United States Constitution, specifically regarding the separation of Church and State. You can write your post anytime, but the blogswarm takes place Easter Weekend, March 21-23. Your post will be linked at the Blog Against Theocracy website during and just after that weekend.

If you have any writer's block on this, here are some great websites to get you started:

2. Send the URL of your post via this online form, and add any comments you would like. I will receive your link and over Easter Weekend (and just after I'm sure) I will post these to the BAT website.
